The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced a nationwide constitution amendment process aimed at ensuring that party structures remain responsive to evolving political realities. More so, the process is expected to strengthen the party’s internal democratic framework.

The initiative, according to the party leaders, is part of broader efforts to consolidate internal cohesion and improve transparency. It is also a means to align its operational guidelines with contemporary governance and electoral demands.

In a statement issued by the APC National Legal Adviser, Murtala Ali Kankia, the party confirmed that zonal consultations have been scheduled across the country. They are currently gathering inputs from stakeholders at various levels. He also explained that the amendment process is designed to be inclusive, allowing party members to contribute to reforms that will shape the future direction of the ruling party.

As part of the exercise, the North-East zonal meeting is scheduled to hold on January 19 at the State Conference Hall in Maiduguri, Borno State. The South-West zonal meeting will follow on January 27 at the Dome International Event Centre in Akure, Ondo State.

Kankia noted that similar consultations would be held in other geopolitical zones, with details to be communicated accordingly. He stressed that the constitution review is expected to reinforce internal democracy. Aside from that, it will enhance dispute-resolution mechanisms and strengthen party administration ahead of future electoral cycles.

Party leaders say the move reflects the APC’s commitment to institutional reforms and internal accountability, as well as its determination to adapt to Nigeria’s changing political landscape.

Ahead of the 2027 elections, political observers view the constitution amendment process as a strategic step toward stabilising the party’s internal structures.

Tension Over Defectors and Party Control

One of the most persistent sources of internal tension has been the large number of politicians defecting from other parties into the APC. Many long-standing members feel that these newcomers are being fast-tracked into leadership and elective slots. Sometimes it violates party rules and membership duration requirements, leading to allegations that they are hijacking party structures rather than being properly integrated.

In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for example, aggrieved members protested at the APC National Secretariat. They accused new entrants of undermining internal processes, flouting constitutional requirements, and attempting to install preferred candidates ahead of elections.
