Although Stranger Things has come to an end, Netflix is bringing back its beloved characters in a new animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, set to premiere on April 23.

The series is created by showrunner Eric Robles, with Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer serving as executive producers. Set between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original live-action series, Tales From ’85 revisits Hawkins in the winter of 1985, shortly after Eleven closed the gate to the Upside Down at Hawkins Lab.

Robles described that plot moment as the biggest creative challenge, as it raised questions about how new Upside Down threats could still exist. He said the idea for the series came after closely re-watching Stranger Things and drawing inspiration from classic 1980s films such as E.T., The Goonies and The Lost Boys.

The animated show follows Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas and Max as they attempt to return to normal life, enjoying snowball fights and Dungeons & Dragons.

However, a new and mysterious threat emerges, forcing the group back into action. Unlike previous seasons, the stakes are smaller but still intense, with the kids focused on protecting Hawkins rather than saving the world.

Robles explained that the series balances adventure, horror and emotional storytelling, emphasizing friendship, loyalty and the responsibility the kids feel toward one another, especially in protecting Eleven. Season 1 also explores quieter character moments, including early relationships and Dustin’s creation of the “Hawkins Investigators Club.”

The show introduces new creatures connected to the Upside Down, combining Hawkins Lab science with dark, otherworldly elements, while remaining faithful to the franchise’s mythology.

The Duffer Brothers, according to Robles, were closely involved throughout development to ensure consistency with the original series.
